  • But, they did something I've been wanting for years (decades?), so I guess there needs to be acknowledgement. I could give a "He Tasks Me" speech like Khan in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan".

  • Nothing worse than wiping a drive that has your file system or photos.īecause I don't know what you want to do with the drive, I'll post a link  and also Google is your friend for stuff like thisīut if it was me, I would run CLEAN and then CREATE PARTITION 1 (remember that you're still locked onto that drive number), then ASSIGN LETTER=X, FORMAT FS = NTFS QUICK, ACTIVE, EXITĪlmost immediately, the drive should show in windows as soon as the diskpart utility is done doing its thing. Personally, I like to DISK DETAIL after selecting a disk to confirm I know I'm on the correct drive. now at this point you can make the drive active, list details, play with the partitions, etc SELECT DISK # (# being the number associated with the drive) LIST DISK (this should show what disks are hooked up to the system, you should see one that is about 500gb You should see a different prompt at this point Try to use the DISKPART command (invoke a command prompt with local admin rights and run diskpart with no options, I'll caps the commands)

I had a drive that was hooked up to a mac and it showed the same way on a Win7 machine until I DISKPARTed it) There are a ton of tutorials on Technet and online to help you fix the issue with the drive (the drive is in raw vs having a file system and Windows at least won't touch it until you commit to making changes that will impact the drive i.e.

However, if you want to start using the drive again, it is possible. Usually it's because the EFS or PEBCAK because I broke something.

Speaking from experience, I've had this happen to some of my drives. If it is worth your time, you may need to pay for a recovery service or tools like PHOTOREC. If you want to get to the data on the drive, I'm sorry to say that it's probably gone or not worth your time. I tried a recover but i don't really know what I'm doing with it.

You guys reckon its dead? I've tried some third party software to format it to FAT32 but on some software it doesnt turn up. When trying to delete volume through disk management it says "The system cannot find the file specified" When trying to format through disk management it says "The format did not complete successfully" A cmd format /FS:FAT32 doesnt work (probably because it's 500GB?). However, I cannot format, mark partition as active, or delete volume. All i want is to format setting it to FAT32 and create one primary partition. I did try plugging it into a linux machine and there was no indication of it even being picked up.Ĭhecking under disk management, it turns out its file system is set to RAW and I need it to be FAT32. After repluggin it, it says i should format it but later comes up with an error "Windows was unable to complete format" and that i should check if its not perhaps "read only" etc. I cannot create or put anything on it as it says. I am able to explore the drive SOMETIMES but theres nothing on it.

I plug it into my windows 7 laptop, and it appears in computer manager -> disk management. I'd just like to comfirm whether or not its days are over. I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex external harddrive (500GB).
